Toy safety

When you buy toys for small children, bear in mind the following safety advice:

1. The toy should suit the age, interests and skill-level of the child. Check indications of age suitability or limitations on the packaging.

2. Get rid of the packaging – to a child this is also a plaything, but plastic wrapping or moulding, or anything chewable, can be dangerous.

3. Make yourself and the child familiar with usage and operating instructions.

4. Check for specific directions on maintenance and care.

5. Check the equipment regularly for rust, wear, peeling paint and any damage that could be dangerous.

6. Check for sharp edges resulting from wear and tear over time, and blunt the edges or discard the toy.

7. Projectiles such as arrows, darts and boomerangs can cause injury. These items should have blunted, softened edges and ends.

8. Toys with ropes and cords should be used under the watchful eye of an adult, and loose ends tucked safely away when not in use.
